Keeping our sport clean and free from doping is important for the health of you and your teammates, and for the integrity of the sport you love.
- As an athlete it is important to know your rights and responsibilities as an athlete while being tested.
- Athletes must comply with directions and not interfere during the testing process, but they also have the right to have someone attend a test with them and ask for time to warm down or attend a media interview.
The STRICT LIABILITY PRINCIPLE states that YOU are solely responsible for any prohibited substances that are found in your body.
It is your responsibility to know what is banned, so you need to take it upon yourself to know exactly what your putting into your body.
The consequences of doping can include a ban from all sport (not just AFL) for up to for yours, and can extend outside of the playing field including physical and mental health, social dynamics, and economic effects.
Physical & Mental Health
- Anti-doping measures help prevent athletes from using performance-enhancing substances that may pose serious risks to their health.
- Anti-doping policies promote fair competition, ensuring that athletes compete on a level playing field. This fosters a sense of integrity and fairness, contributing to the mental well-being of athletes who can trust that success is achieved through skill, training, and dedication rather than artificial enhancements.
Social Effects
- Athletes serve as role models for many individuals, especially younger generations. Anti-doping measures contribute to the promotion of positive values and ethics, encouraging a clean and healthy lifestyle among both athletes and their followers.
Economic Effects
- Doping scandals can have severe economic repercussions for sports organisations. Sponsors may withdraw support, and fans may lose interest if they perceive a lack of integrity in the sport.
