Women & Girls
Umpiring is for everyone
Umpiring is a great way to make friends, build confidence and earn some money along the way. The AFL is committed to creating positive and enjoyable experiences for women, girls, and non-binary umpires.
No matter what stage of your umpiring journey, we have programs for you!
Every whistle blown, every flag waved, and every call made by a woman on the field paves the way for more to follow.
Kayla has been umpiring for seven years, inspired by her tennis coach to give it a try. She loves its flexibility, which lets her juggle sport, work, and university while staying active in a team environment. Umpiring across the Riverland, Yorke Peninsula, and Northern Areas, she’s made new friends and connected with a diverse community.
Ruby Mat Isa began umpiring in 2023, initially thinking it was a running club. With no prior knowledge of the game, she embraced the challenge, quickly learning to make fast decisions and stay calm under pressure. For Ruby, umpiring goes beyond fitness, it's about being part of a passionate, diverse community and growing her love for the sport.
With 17 years of experience umpiring, and now an AFL Field Umpire, Eleni Tee has built a lifetime of memories and friendships through the game. She loves the unique, front-row perspective umpiring provides and the strong connections formed both on and off the field. Her advice to anyone curious about umpiring is simple: “Give it a go!” It’s a fun way to learn new skills, stay active, and make great friends.
